A bespoke hearth designed as part of the renovation of a family home in Exeter.

Within the dining room of our Exeter project, we introduced a new focal point with a hand-blackened steel hearth and wood-burner.

The steel goes through an intensive process to create the desired blackened finish. After the surface is chemically cleaned, a second chemical is applied to start a reaction with the metal in order to create the blackened patina.

The depth and richness of colour is dictated by how the chemical is worked in and the amount of time it is left for. A final chemical is then applied to stop the reaction at the relevant time. Finally, a natural beeswax finish is applied to seal and protect the hearth.
