A characterful renovation of a Victorian terrace in West London, reimagined as a warm, light-filled home for a young family.

Purchased as a first family home by a private client, the house had been stripped of almost all original character, retaining only a single fireplace, and lacked the floor space found in neighbouring properties. The ambition was clear: to create a home that felt inviting, personal and calm, while unlocking the full potential of the site through considered spatial and architectural improvements.

Simpson Studio was appointed to deliver full architectural, interior and furniture design services, managing the project across all RIBA stages, from initial brief through to completion on site.

Originally built in the late 1800s, the two-storey mid-terrace sits within a West London conservation area.

The design introduced a full-width ground floor rear extension, a deepened closet wing and a third storey with a mansard roof, maximising internal footprint without compromising the property’s proportions or setting.

The reconfigured home now accommodates three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study across three floors. A new staircase, enhanced thermal performance, and underfloor heating throughout bring the house up to contemporary standards, while the interior scheme reflects the client’s desire for a soft, cottage-inspired atmosphere—layered with texture, natural materials and warm light.

At the heart of the home, a generous open-plan kitchen, living and dining space connects seamlessly to the rear garden. Designed for a keen cook, the kitchen prioritises function, flow and storage, while maintaining a relaxed, lived-in feel.

Bespoke joinery features throughout, from hallway and living room bookshelves to a sculptural stair and tailored bedroom wardrobes. A hidden WC and utility room, discreetly tucked behind a bookcase door, adds a playful but practical touch.

Simpson Studio also curated all interior styling, artwork and furniture, delivering a cohesive, turnkey finish.
