Uninhabited for a number of years, this 15th century tower house in Ireland needed both preserving and modernising to transform it into a home and bring it back to life. Beginning with the design for a new roof and shelter on the top floor, four concept designs emerged, each exploring a different lifestyle, focusing on key elements of the medieval tower house. These range from the Conventional and Ephemeral, faithfully restoring the original pitched roof and only lightly altering spaces to suit modern day living, to the Playful and Radical, both concepts that seek to push boundaries spatially, contrasting old and new. By incorporating elements such as a chapel, sky garden, meditative pool and external staircase, each design celebrates the former life of the tower as a place of entertaining, pleasure and enjoyment.
